Stephan G. Stephansson

Honoured Poet

​Stephán G. Stephansson left Iceland in 1873, settling first in the U.S. before moving to Markerville in 1889. While in Markerville his political and philosophical thinking evolved, and he wrote extensively in Icelandic.

Stephansson Monument

September 4, 1950, the Historic Sites & Monuments Board unveiled a monument to Stephan west of the Markerville walking bridge. The unveiling was attended by many academic establishment of Canada & the U.S.
Daniel Morkeberg gave the keynote speech & Stephan's son, Jakob cut the ribbon.

Christinnson & Stephansson Cemetery

The first person interred in this family cemetery was Stefan Christinnson in 1905, followed through the years by various members of the Stephansson & Christinnson's families.
Stephan G. Stephansson was interred in August 1927. On July 19, 1936 a monument, built over the grave, was unveiled
