Ghost Stories by Jamie at Fensala Hall, 24 Main Avenue, Markerville on Friday, August 7th - Doors and cash bar open at 6:30 pm, with stories from 7:00 - 9:00 pm! Gather around the lamplight and hear spooky tales of prairie spirits gone by! Jamie Gray will be reading a selection of ghost stories written by her to accompany her artwork shown at the Ghost Stories YYC exhibitions in Calgary. Have you seen a ghost?! Bring your own recollections to share. Suitable for families - all “dark and stormy night”, no gore! ARTIST BIO: Jamie Gray is a prairie born and bred visual artist working in sculptural media, paint, and the written word. She is most interested in exploring mortality (in a good way) and ancestral heritage (in a critical way). Cemeteries are her favourite hang-out for tranquillity and contemplation. Doris at Work: An Afternoon of Watercolour at the Buttermaker's House yard in Markerville on Tuesday, July 28th, from 1:00 - 2:30 pm! Artist Drop-In * Date: Tuesday, July 28 * Time: 1:00–2:30 p.m. * Location: Buttermaker's House, 109 Creamery Way, Markerville, Alberta ARTIST BIO: Doris grew up with artistic desires and opportunities in the form of music. For her motherhood and home making days she loved to decorate each home and sewing project with an artistic touch. When she was in her early 50s, she had the opportunity to take valuable watercolour lessons with Didsbury artist Elsie Archer. She became familiar with acrylics and composition and fell in love with chalk pastels during her years in the Olds Art Club. At present she is getting together with a small group of ladies weekly to paint together for an afternoon. She has shown and sold her work at the Olds Art Club spring and fall art shows and at the Olds Museum. Doris has been an avid gardener, florist and piano teacher/accompanist, and now enjoys every moment she can find to be an artist in watercolour, pastels and acrylics. By staying at the Buttermaker’s House, she is cherishing the occasion to devote her time to her painting, in a beautiful, inspiring atmosphere and as she shares her art she hopes to pass on her enjoyment to others. Selena Phillips-Boyle at the Creamery Courtyard in Markerville on Friday, July 17th, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm! Join photographer Selena Phillips-Boyle for a creative, hands-on photo embroidery workshop. Selena will teach basic embroidery stitches and present examples of embroidery photography work done by various artists. Participants will be invited to make their own photo embroideries using either images from our Markerville Archives or participants’ own family history photos. Photos should be something reflecting your family history such as a family photo, a building/home, animals, a family event. NOTE: two photos need to be sent ahead so they can be prepared on specialty cardstock. WORKSHOP DETAILS * Date: Friday, July 17 * Time: 1:00–3:00 p.m. * Location: Creamery Courtyard, 114 Creamery Way, Markerville, Alberta This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities, including children as young as five. You’re also welcome to attend as an observer or use one of our archival photographs if you don’t have family photos to submit. REGISTRATION Please preregister by emailing [email protected]. If you plan to use your own photographs, include your two images with your registration email no later than July 13. ARTIST BIO: Selena Phillips-Boyle (they/she) is a photographer and filmmaker living in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal, Canada). Selena prioritises slow and intentional image-making through collaboration, centering a public engagement approach to image creation. Using lens-based media, they use experimental analogue film techniques to document and explore topics at the intersections of labour, gender, and mental health. Selena incorporates archival materials from their family into their creative process, opening avenues for bodies of artistic work that deal with themes of family histories and queer identities. Originally from Alberta, Selena will be Artist-in-Residence in Markerville from July 13–20, developing a new project titled Lefse and Love. Drawing from their Finnish family history, the project blends family photographs and archival objects to examine the lasting impact of migration and memory on identity. |
