Award Recipient Announcement 2025

The Icelandic National League of North America Artist Residency Award was established in 2024 through an agreement between the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society (SGSIS) and the Icelandic National League of North America (INLNA). The Award is funded by the INLNA and administered by The Buttermaker's House Management Committee.

Purpose
The award recognizes the literary importance of Icelandic poet Stephan G. Stephansson and his role in furthering the arts in both Iceland and Canada. It is in keeping with the missions of both organizations: (1) SGSIS’s mission to build a vibrant rural community and enrich the cultural tapestry of Alberta and Canada. (2) The INLNA’s mission to sustain the kinship between its Canadian, American, and Icelandic members as well as North Americans interested in Iceland.

Location
The Buttermaker’s House is an artist residency which first opened its doors in 2022. It’s a meticulously restored heritage farmhouse initially built in 1913. Fully renovated with new furniture and appliances which maintain a classic aesthetic while providing modern comfort. The house has a bedroom, living room, full kitchen, bathroom, and a small studio for working. The house sits on a tree-lined lot along the slowly flowing Medicine River in the vibrant and dynamic rural community of Markerville. It’s an excellent place to rest, reflect, create, and connect.

Amount of Award
With financial support from the INLNA, up to six weeks of residency time will be divided between one to three artists per year based on their eligibility. The number, amount of awards and the length of the stay will be determined based on the applications received. Each year applications open in the fall, with deadline for submission on November 30th. Recipient(s) will be announced the beginning of January.

Eligibility
  • Artists with Icelandic Heritage or artists working on projects relating to, or inspired by Iceland, its people, culture, and/or environment
  • Open to all disciplines of art. Feel free to contact SGSIS with questions about work space
  • Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply

The Award will be allocated on the basis of the following criteria:
  • Project description from your Buttermaker's House Artist in Residence application of cover letter, proposal statement including any desired community engagement, Curriculum Vitae, support materials
  • An additional 150 words or less on the connection the artist or the project has to Iceland
