The Icelandic National League of North America Artist Residency Award was established in 2024 through an agreement between the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society (SGSIS) and the Icelandic National League of North America (INLNA). The Award is funded by the INLNA and administered by The Buttermaker's House Management Committee.
Applications for the award are open from September 15 to November 30 of each year. Awards will be announced not later than January 30 of the following year, to be used in that calendar year.
Purpose The award recognizes the literary importance of Icelandic poet Stephan G. Stephansson and his role in furthering the arts in both Iceland and Canada. It is in keeping with the mission of each organization: (1) SGSIS’s mission to build a vibrant rural community and enrich the cultural tapestry of Alberta and Canada. (2) The INLNA’s mission to sustain the kinship between its Canadian, American, and Icelandic members as well as North Americans interested in Iceland.
Location The Buttermaker’s House is a meticulously restored heritage farmhouse initially built in 1913. It is a Provincially-designated historic resource, fully renovated and furnished to maintain a classic aesthetic while providing modern comfort. The house has a bedroom, living room, full kitchen, bathroom, a small studio for working, and larger studio space in the basement. The house sits on a tree-lined lot along the slowly flowing Medicine River in the vibrant and dynamic rural community of Markerville, Alberta. It’s an excellent place to rest, reflect, create, and connect.
Amount of Award Financial support from the INLNA totalling $3,000 will be awarded to up to three artists per year based on their eligibility. The number of awards, the amount of each award, and the length of the stay will be determined based on the applications received. The financial award is intended to cover the rent costs during the residency, depending on the length of the residency. All costs, including rent over and above the amount of the award; transportation to, from and within Markerville; food, toiletries, and other essentials; artist’s supplies, etc., are the responsibility of the artist-in-residence.
