Settlement Tales of West Central Alberta:

The Markerville Story

by Carl Morkeberg

Size: 10"w x 8.5"h Softcover

292 Pages

A series of weekly articles by the manager of the Markerville Creamery originally published in the Innisfail Province between 1967 and 1972. These entertaining and informative front-page articles recount the colourful history of the Markerville area from 1888 to the late 1960s. Included here are family histories, comical anecdotes, and inspiring stories drawn from the country west of Innisfail, particularly west and north of Big Bend including Tindastoll, Heckla, Hola, Dickson, Spruce View, Raven, Kevisville, Stauffer, Caroline, Ricinus and the districts of Craig, Happy Hill, New Hill and Diamond Valley.

Carl Morkeberg’s tales of the characters who settled the country surrounding Markerville, from Caroline to Innisfail, present us with an insider’s view of history in the making. This is history-telling by the people who lived it. The book was first published under the title Markerville Story in 1980, and has now been re-printed by the Central Alberta Historical Society with the addition of drawings, photographs and sidebars to clarify obscure concepts and terms to a new generation.

Dedicated to all of the hardy pioneers who settled in the Markerville District. Also to all heirs and successors, to them and to everyone who has ever called the Markerville area “HOME”.

“Carl Morkeberg was a man of outstanding character and he possessed a keen sense of humor. He was also an eternal optimist who could find the bright side of everything. He never, ever locked the Creamery. If it was good for the community Uncle Carl would be the first one to step forward. It was so natural of him to assume the responsibility for researching and documenting this information that has proven to be of such historical importance.

Carl was not a card player nor a curler nor a hockey player nor a ball player...We was, however, the unofficial “Mayor” of Markerville or as Aunt Marion called him, the “Nightmare” of Markerville.”

Don Johnson, Carl Morkeberg’s nephew,
