At the heart of the Central Alberta community of Markerville stands FENSALA Hall, named by its Icelandic founders for the dwelling place
of ‘Frigg’ - the Norse goddess of home, marriage, and motherhood. Literally, with a touch of irony, ‘the home of the goddess.’
Built in 1903 with less than three hundred dollars, brute strength and determination, FENSALA Hall became the soul of the community — a place where friends gathered, love was found, grief shared...life was lived.
Inside are the stories of the oldest Hall in continuous use in Alberta from its humble origins to its restoration in 2006. FENSALA Hall stands today as a testament to the great pioneering spirit of the original Icelandic settlers that lives on in the community minded commitment of their proud descendents.
