Life on Soggy Bottom Ranch.

Why did I choose this title for my book? Well, it’s this way: Most of my life has been spent on the family farm—the land my grandfather chose when he came to Alberta. It’s been a good life and I have no regrets. But if I could change one thing it would be the lay of our land. Originally our home quarters were surrounded by swamps on all sides.

When I was a kid going to school, I had to wear a pair of rubber boots every single day to cross the slough. Let me tell you, sloshing to school on a daily basis wasn’t much fun. Farming on wetland in the early days wasn‘t much fun either, as we were always getting stuck.

In later years, a ditching project helped dry out the land but even today we can still get tractors stuck, especially when haying the wet areas. This can be annoying as pulling farm implements out of the swamp means losing valuable time.

In the last few years, my son Dale’s tractor has been stuck on various occasions, so he began calling our operation the Soggy Bottom Ranch. Although it makes me smile, I think Life on Soggy Bottom Ranch is an excellent name for my book.
