About the Author

Stephan Vilberg Benediktson was born in Innisfail, Alberta in 1933. While a teenager, he worked on the family farm, as a truck driver and in the oilfields of Alberta. A high school dropout, he returned to school in 1957 and went on to earn a degree in engineering at the University of Alberta in 1962.

Stephan worked for affiliates of Exxon, in Canada, the United States, Australia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. When the Government of Canada opened the Beaufort Sea for exploration in the mid-seventies Stephan was recruited to assist in regulating those activities.

As the vice-president of Amerada Hess Corporation in the early eighties, Stephan managed the firm’s activities in the United Arab Emirates. In the mid-eighties, he managed an Argentine family-owned company, Bridas in Buenos Aires. Between 1987 and his retirement, Stephan founded and managed an oil company, Benson Petroleum Ltd., and co-founded two others, PetroSantander Inc. and Kroes Energy, based in Calgary, Alberta.
