Markerville Creamery Museum

Built in 1902 by the newly formed Tindastoll Butter & Cheese Manufacturing Association, the Markerville Creamery operated continuously until 1972. During the 70 years of operation, the Creamery won many buttermaking quality awards and was recognized as a major production contender around the world. Upon closure in 1972, the building was abandoned and left to deteriorate.
In 1986, the dilapidated building was fully restored by the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society as a museum depicting the commercial butter making industry set in 1932. The Creamery’s ice storage area was transformed into a coffee shop & named Kaffistofa (Icelandic for coffee store) which serves our community and visitors with Icelandic delights along with a regular lunch menu & ice cream.
